Carol Grant with some of her award winning herd of Alpacas. Alpacas are a South American Camelid first domesticated by the pre-Incas some 6000 years ago for their highly prized fibre. Huge numbers were slaughtered by the Spanish Conquistadors but the alpaca survived in the high Andes of Peru, Chile & Bolivia, 4-5000 metres above sea level. Queen Victoria had a small herd at Windsor, in the 1830's. During the 20th Century the South American industry went into decline. 1984 saw an international revival and herds can now be found in North America, Australia, UK and most of Europe. The Alpaca is a warm, friendly and curious animal. They are very gentle and make superb pets. The bonus is their fleece which produces incredibly warm garments! |
